The Little Jo Ballad

Award-winning director Maggie Greenwald brings a fresh take to the traditional western genre with The Ballad of Little Jo, featuring an outstanding performance by Suzy Amis. The film follows Josephine Monaghan (Amis), a high-society woman who, after giving birth to an illegitimate child, leaves her home in disgrace. As she travels west, she quickly learns that a woman on her own is an easy target for men, prompting her to disguise herself as a boy named Little Jo. Little Jo faces the harsh realities of the Wild West, including brutal winters and dangerous outlaws. However, her biggest challenge comes when she falls in love with a man who uncovers her secret.

The movie also includes strong supporting performances by Bo Hopkins, Ian McKellen, David Chung, Heather Graham, Anthony Heald, Melissa Leo, René Auberjonois, and Carrie Snodgress. This beautifully crafted film, based on a true story, celebrates the unconventional heroes of the wild west - cowgirls.
